Projects

Here are some examples of second grade projects.  

Though this project students will learn skills to support them in accessing non-fiction texts and will delve into the world of "reading to learn". They will work collaboratively to confirm prior knowledge, define new key learnings, and push their thinking by pondering questions that arise as they discover new content in order to write a non-fiction narrative about the animal of their choice.

Students will investigate how different variables of a car, such as weight and size of wheels, will affect the way the car works. They will use their knowledge from these investigations to make important design choices. Students will work collaboratively to design and build a car that they will drive in a derby race.

To kick of the year with fostering a feeling of unity, collaboration, and community the second grade team designed a project where students will work together to create a unique class puzzle.

Second graders will design and build a toy and will write a story about what the toy does when no one is around. The toy and their story will be donated to children in need. 

Second graders will learn about feelings and determine a color associated with each feeling in order to create an Andy Warhol inspired piece of art.  The goal to develop a classroom culture that understands and values each other's feelings.

 

Students will learn about specific foods in the different food groups such as dairy, grains and meat.  In addition, they will learn about a variety of herbs and plant three of their choice.  Students will experiment with making several kid-friendly recipes that they can use in their future and share with their families.  They will build herb boxes that will hold their herbs and eventually be taken home to utilize in household meals.  Students will also be displaying their knowledge of where food comes from and sharing recipes by creating a placemat that can be used in the home.

To discover what character traits make up an admirable and heroic person students will be reading a variety of literature and meeting and interviewing community heroes. In addition, students will be creating a tribute to a hero from their own life.

To introduce the habits of heart and mind, also known as the “High Tech High 5”, our class will be creating a slide show to demonstrate how these qualities could look at HTe.

In order to discover the life cycles and habitats of a variety of animals students will be researching and investigating an animal.  Students will demonstrate their knowledge of their animal by creating a board game.  

In order to develop an appreciation for an important world wide event students will be studying many aspects of the Olympic games.  Students will demonstrate their knowledge of this event by creating and participating in a cultural fair.
