A Hero In Our Eyes

To discover what character traits make up an admirable and heroic person students will be reading a variety of literature and meeting and interviewing community heroes. In addition, students will be creating a tribute to a hero from their own life.

Why:

  • To broaden students understanding of real life heroes.

  • To emphasize the importance of being a good citizen and contributing to ones community.

  • To continue to practice the importance of critique and creating beautiful work.

  • To give students an opportunity to gain knowledge from experts in their community

Essential Question:

  • What makes a hero?

Stages:

  • Students will explore the idea of a hero through their knowledge and literature based on superheroes.

  • Through literature, we will move onto the idea of real-life heroes and name the qualities that describe them.

  • Students will keep a “Hero Journal” in order to document their thoughts and reactions to stories.

  • Students will prepare for interviews with community heroes.

  • Community Heroes will visit our classroom.

  • Students will begin to brainstorm heroes in their own lives.

  • Students will choose one hero from his/her life and begin to work on their tribute.

  • Students will work on critique with help from an upper grade class, in order to create a beautiful tribute.

  • They will take what they learned from their critique and revise/edit their tributes.

  • Tributes will be displayed at Exhibition Night, December 15th.
